What’s happening with the Corn Grinder?
In 2016, the women of Bassin Caiman approached Haiti H2O about partnering to build a Corn Grinder in their community.
In 2017, a team from Trinity Church of Nunda worked alongside our Haitian partners and local laborers to lay the foundation stones (Haitian style—hand-carrying each large boulder). Friendship Community Church sent a team that same year, and they learned from Haitian bosses how to pour cement and form blocks that were used to build the walls. The headers were completed by masons near Bassin Caiman, with the help of the community.
In 2018, Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church funded an in-country team from another partner village, Plain Matin, to help put the roof on. And in 2019, Friendship Church sent more funds so that local workers in Bassin Caiman could pour the floor.
Our Haitian partners are accustomed to this incremental approach to construction projects—building as funds and resources allow. We are very close to completion now! We just need to purchase and install doors, windows, and the commercial corn grinder equipment. We have set a goal to raise the remaining $15,000 needed.
