The Corn grinder micro-business began with a vision of the women in Bassin Caiman.
Each week, the women of Bassin Caiman would walk 4 hours to the nearest corn grinder to provide ground corn, an essential food staple, for their families.
They could only grind as much corn as they could carry, sometimes making multiple trips a week necessary.
Corn is the main dietary staple in this region of Haiti. It is often used as a substitute for rice, which is mostly imported into the country. But corn is one of the food sources that Haitians can rely on because it is produced domestically. Around 70% of corn in Haiti is processed before use, including corn that is ground. A local corn grinder micro-business is an important resource for the community and will increase the capacity for families to produce corn to feed their families and sell to others.
“Corn remains one of the agricultural products that Haiti is generally self-sufficient in.”
