Our Haitian partners saw the need for improved sanitation in their communities where there is no electricity, running water, or public sewage system. Pastor Celande asked Haiti H2O to partner with Bassin Caiman to address this need. The community worked with Haiti H2O to review the need and possible solutions. The local committee voted to pursue composting toilets to address this health and sanitation need.
A composting toilet provides a safe and secure structure to dispose of human waste, while also converting that waste to compost to replenish the soil. So far, we have sponsored four composting toilets in Bassin Caiman and one in St. Martin.
Our Plan
Community members identify and affirm the need for proper sanitation.
Land is donated by individuals from each neighborhood for a toilet.
Haitian masons are hired for the construction of the composting toilet, supporting the work of local Haitians and increasing economic opportunities.
A committee is formed in each area and is responsible for educating the community about the composting toilet.
Volunteers are compiled and tasked with the responsibility of maintaining the toilet and stocking cover materials.
